Organization: Classes will include music theory and history as well as vocal and aural development. A variety of strategies will be used to cover these topics. These strategies may include lecture, whole group and small group discussions, research, singing, dancing and playing rhythm instruments and guitars. Course Objectives and Topics: In the first quarter and over the course of the school year, the student will: Review the orchestra and families of instruments: strings, wind, brass, percussion, and keyboards Review vocal ranges: soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto; tenor, baritone, bass Recognize frequently used Italian terms for tempos and articulations Recognize introduction, interlude, and coda in musical selections Recognize theme and variations Identify chords (I, IV, V, V7) and intervals Understand the following notation: staff, treble clef, bass clef, names of lines and spaces in the treble clef whole rest, half rest, quarter rest, eighth rest whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note, grouped sixteenth notes bar line, double bar line, measure, repeat signs meters: 4/4, 2/4, 3/4 and 6/8 dynamics: mp, p, pp, mf, f, ff tied and dotted notes sharps, flats and naturals D.C. al fine The historical origins of music
In the second quarter, students will study the beginnings of music, including the Medieval and Renaissance Eras.
In the third and fourth quarters, students will study the Baroque and Classical Eras Grading: Quarter Grading will be weighted as follows: Assignments 40% Participation 30% Quizzes/Tests 30% Semester Grading will be weighted as follows: Quarter 1 Grade 40% Quarter 2 Grade 40% Semester Final 20%
Grades will be assigned according to the following percentage points: A 94+ A- 90-93 B+ 87-89 B 83-86 B- 80-82 C+ 77-79 C 73-76 C- 70-72 D+ 67-69 D 63-66 D- 60-62 F <60 Assignments with no name or which are late will lose 20% each day and after 3 days will receive no credit. Assignments with first name only will lose 10%. Participation points will be earned daily, recorded on Infinite Campus weekly, and will be graded as follows: + = 10/10 (Exceptional participation and preparedness) 0 = 8/10 (Meeting expectations for participation and preparedness) - = 6/10 (Not meeting expectations or causing minor distractions) x = 0/10 (Not meeting expectations and distracting others from the educational process)
