Below is a brief explanation of how Eagle Ridge Academy's music program fits the classical education model. The lower school curriculum includes a multitude of musical facts (music theory and history) that students absorb through participation, direct instruction, modeling and experimenting. Our middle school curriculum reviews facts learned in lower school while providing more in depth study to understand the logic of written music as well as its development throughout history. Using this deep understanding of music to develop performance skills and achieve personal expression through music are the goals of our high school curriculum. This completes the classical pattern known as “trivium.” Our music curriculum is language-focused, as students listen to or read composer biographies and music history texts, lyrics to songs and instructions for dances or games. It also includes the very specialized language of music, the only truly universal language we have! The topics covered in music class are frequently interrelated with what students are learning in other subject areas. This interdisciplinary approach is outlined in the Core Knowledge Sequence and is in keeping with the classical approach to learning. |
