K-5 Lower School Music

Full-Day Kindergarten students and each class in grades 1 through 5 meets for 25-30 minutes, twice a week.
Half-Day Kindergarten students meet for 20 minutes once a week.

On the K-5 Calendar you will see dates for each grade level’s “Informance.” This is a term we use to describe an informative performance that demonstrates our learning as well as performance skill development. Informances will combine all three classes in each grade level so that there will be 42-69 students on stage together! These events will be the highlight of their musical experience this year so please plan to attend and be sure that your child wears their formal uniform.

The K-5 Curriculum page explains the topics covered in Music class.

K-5 Expectations gives information about expected behavior and grading policies.

Share Your Talent Day is like a "show and tell" day for students to share one of their personal talents while in music class. This is not graded or scored in any way; it is simply an opportunity for students to build stage presence and respectful audience behaviors.

Parent involvement:
All Music classes take place between 10:15 and 2:45, so if parents wish to bring instruments to and from school themselves they may do so before and after those times. Parents who choose to attend Share Your Talent Day should check with Ms. Nimchuk for their child's music class time, sign in at the front office, and be aware of our policies regarding parking and student attendance.

Share Your Talent Day Guidelines:
-Each student may be in 1 act
-1-4 students may be involved in each act
-Acts should be 2 minutes or less in length
-Students must stay in school uniform

Acts may include:
-Playing an instrument (a piano is available, all other instruments and sheet music must be brought in from home.)
-Singing a song (if you want to sing along to music we will find the Karaoke version on You Tube. Students may not sing along with a CD or mp3; we want to hear students’ voices, not the recording artists’ voice!)*
-Dancing*
-Individual martial arts routine* (no mats are available; perform at your own risk!)
-Reciting a poem or acting out a scene from a play or musical*
-Demonstrating one “trick”* (magic, juggling, yo-yo, etc.)
-Telling one joke*
*If your act includes words/lyrics, the words/lyrics must be turned in one week before Share Your Talent Day to be checked for school appropriateness.
